WooCommerce Store: Adding and Editing Products

This guide covers the basics of product management in a WooCommerce store.

Add a new product

  1. In WordPress admin, go to Products → Add New Product. On some WooCommerce versions the label appears as Add New.
  2. Enter the product name.
  3. In Product data, confirm the product type (for most products, start with Simple product).
  4. Set pricing in Product data > General.
  5. If needed, configure stock in Product data > Inventory.
  6. Add shipping details (weight and dimensions) for physical products.
  7. Add a full product description and a short description.
  8. Assign category/tags.
  9. Add a main product image and gallery images.
  10. Click Publish.

Edit an existing product

  1. Go to Products > All Products.
  2. Choose one of these options:
    • Edit for full product settings
    • Quick Edit for fast changes (for example price, stock, category)
    • Bulk actions > Edit to update multiple products at once
  3. Update fields and click Update.

Variable products (sizes, colors, variants)

If a product has options like size or color:

  1. Set product type to Variable product.
  2. Add attributes (for example Size, Color).
  3. Mark attributes as used for variations.
  4. Create variations and set price/stock/image per variation.

Good practices when adding products

  • Use clear product names that match what customers search for.
  • Keep descriptions practical: what it is, who it is for, key specs, and delivery info.
  • Use high-quality images with consistent style and proportions.
  • Use consistent SKU format for easier stock control.
  • Keep categories clean and avoid too many overlapping categories.
  • Fill weight and dimensions for shipped products to avoid checkout issues.
  • Review spelling, pricing, tax class, and stock status before publishing.
  • For SEO, keep titles, slugs, and descriptions specific and natural.
  • Test the product page on mobile before launch.
tip

Start simple: publish a few products first, validate checkout and delivery flow, then import or add products in larger batches.

Quick pre-publish checklist

  • Product name and price are correct
  • Main image is set
  • Category is assigned
